Sunset Yellow FCF
Sunset Yellow FCF (E110) is a synthetic orange-yellow azo dye used in soft drinks, sweets, and snacks. Like tartrazine, it is one of six colours the EU requires to carry a children’s activity-and-attention warning, and it can trigger reactions in aspirin-sensitive individuals.
Sunset Yellow FCF (E110, "FD&C Yellow 6" in the US) is a water-soluble synthetic azo dye derived from petroleum-based precursors, used purely for colour with no nutritional function.
Following the 2007 Southampton study, EU Regulation 1333/2008 requires foods containing E110 (alongside E102, E104, E122, E124, and E129) to carry a warning about possible effects on children’s activity and attention. No. Sunset Yellow FCF is authorised in the EU under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, subject to maximum permitted levels and a mandatory warning label. It is approved in the US as FD&C Yellow No. 6, but in April 2025 the FDA announced it is working with manufacturers to voluntarily remove Yellow No. 6 and other synthetic dyes by the end of 2026 — a phase-out rather than a legal ban.

EFSA lowered Sunset Yellow’s Acceptable Daily Intake to a temporary value in 2009 after concerns from animal studies. After reviewing new data, in 2014 EFSA revised the ADI to 4 mg per kg of body weight per day and concluded that estimated consumer exposure is well below this level for all age groups.
